It wasn’t the compliment I was expecting. Normally if a client is complimenting me, it’s about how wonderful their space looks after I leave! (I don’t mean to brag, but I really do know what I’m doing!) And normally a compliment doesn’t come when you meet someone for the first time.
I introduced myself & my team, we exchanged the polite “nice to meet you” responses & the first thing she says after that is, “I read your blog & I have to tell you, you’re a very good writer.” WOW, I was not expecting that. She absolutely made my day! I’m quite certain I blushed (even though I always look blushed because I’m Irish—I’ve got 2 colors, red & white). I immediately responded with my usual gushing telling her how much I appreciate the compliment, what a nice thing to say, etc. And for the rest of that day, I couldn’t wipe the smile from my face.
I’m sharing this for a couple of reasons. One is, just how much I appreciate a nice & kind person. Two is, for those of you who don’t know this, I’ve been writing a book for years but time gets away from me & it sometimes takes a back burner. So for someone to compliment my writing skills, out of the blue, gave me so much confidence to get back to that project & get it PUBLISHED! The last reason is this…
Be more like her. Compliment someone. Tell them they’re good at their job. Share how impressed you are with the way they do something. Tell your neighbor how great they are at gardening. Acknowledge your bank teller for always being accurate & always with a smile. Tell the cashier at the grocery store how much you like their hairdo. It takes so little to really make someone’s day!
So what are you waiting for? Start spreading kindness!
